The Sakya Society
Of Canada & Sakya Namgyal
In 1978, in Toronto,
Canada, His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin, Head of the
Sakya Lineage of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, in conjunction
with Wesley and Angela Knapp - who were guided by the inspiration
of their Root Guru, the Venerated Karma Tenzin Dorje Namgyal
Rinpoche - inaugurated the Sakya Society of Canada. His
Holiness appointed the Venerable Deshung Rinpoche to be
its visiting Abbot and the Ven. Namgyal Rinpoche and His
Holiness' sister, Her Eminence Jetsun Kusho Chime Dolkar,
the Sakya Jetsunma, as the Spiritual Advisors. At this same
time His Holiness appointed Wesley and Angela Knapp to be
his personal representatives in Canada, consecrated them
into the Sakya Lineage as a Lama Couple and blessed each
with the title of Sakya Shasanadhara, 'Upholder of the Sakya
Tradition'. Further, His Holiness also established a teaching
centre for the Society, which he named Sakya Thubten Namgyal
Ling - 'The Place of Great Victory of all the Sakyan Sages'
Teachings' - commonly known as Sakya Namgyal, with Wesley
and Angela Knapp as the resident Lamas. All of these Lamas
received many Teachings and Initiations from the Senior
Lama of the Sakya Lineage, His Eminence the Venerable Chogye
Trichen Rinpoche.
